Where Cures Begin

Fred Hutch Cancer Research Center has been a prolific source of life-saving, next-generation cures for decades. Through a series of short films, portraits, and infographics we reveal a rarely seen, behind-the-scenes view of the institution and the hidden alchemy behind its cures: a dynamic culture of curiosity, empathic scientists, and relentless hope.

The Hutch

Where do scientific breakthroughs come from? “The Hutch,” as it’s known by locals in Seattle, has produced three Nobel prizes, pioneered immunotherapy, and saved countless lives from cancer and other diseases. This short film explores the secret to creating a culture of free thinking innovation, a place where “great science is the currency.”

Seattle-based Fred Hutch is a national leader in cancer research. Back in the ‘70s they pioneered and won a Nobel Prize for bone marrow transplantation. Today, they’re doing next-gen immunotherapy research with the audacious goal of eliminating most cancers by 2025. The Hutch came to us with two related challenges: First, help them explain the complex field of immunotherapy to patients and donors in a simple but compelling way. Second, help them humanize and differentiate their unique approach to research. In the absence of a brief we created our own. Our discovery process led us to a powerful unifying theme: Where next-gen research joins hands with cancer care. With every piece of content, we’d speak to both the head and the heart behind Hutch’s life-changing mission. We proposed a content package that would capture different dimensions of this story and provide a set of complementary assets to use across key channels. From there...we dove in, spending an intensive week on Fred Hutch’s lakeside campus learning, collaborating with in-house teams, and capturing stories. After on-camera interviews with multiple scientists we decided the Hutch’s story was best told by one articulate and approachable researcher-doctor who spends her days moving from lab to bedside and back.

Bench to Bedside

Dr. Sylvia Lee is a doctor and scientist, as comfortable leading a team in high-stakes research trials as she is explaining side effects of treatments to her patients. Through this film, we get a privileged view of Dr. Lee as she moves through her world and connects the dots between next-generation cancer research and patient care.

The Heart of Science

Scientists are often portrayed as cold, analytical, and detached. Through a series of personal interviews, film clips, and portraits, we hear the personal stories of cancer researchers and what motivates them to show up every day to chase the next discovery.
